Written by Lois Lowry, “Gathering Blue” is a book that challenges its readers to reflect critically on the future based on the social values and the political direction they presently take. The book follows the story of Kira, an orphaned young girl taken to live in a strange government compound at the center of her village due to her deformity. She hopes to prove her worth so she can remain in the village.
While at her new residence, Kira meets other equally talented and creative children. They strive to find the truth behind their situations, their parents and their society. The society, as Kira finally comes to realize, normally abandons the disabled and the weak, and it is upon them to devise their means of survival to avoid such a fate.
Kira learns the art of dyeing using all the other colors except blue. No one in Kira’s village knows how to dye blue as a result of the numerous superstitions held by the villagers. Kira finally acknowledges that in order for her to reach her potential and become successful in life, she has to overcome all her limitations and break all the age-old superstitions in her society so as to ensure that she "gathers the blue."
