Stephen King’s “Rose Red” TV miniseries is based on a true story. In an interview with TV Guide, King admitted that he based the story on the Winchester Mansion found in San Jose, California.
Stephen King learned about the mansion when he was a young boy from Ripley’s “Believe it or Not Comics.” As the Winchester story goes, a medium promised Sarah Winchester, the daughter-in-law of Oliver Winchester, that she would only die when the mansion was complete. The house was never completed, and she supposedly haunted the mansion for years. In King’s “Red Rose” TV miniseries, he replaces the Winchester mansion with a fictitious mansion called Rose Red.
