The 1932 action film, “Tarzan the Ape Man,” starred Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O’Sullivan and animal actor Jiggs as Cheeta, the chimpanzee. Weismuller made close to 20 Tarzan movies between 1932 and 1949.
Weismuller and O’Sullivan appeared in five Tarzan movies together, including “Tarzan and His Mate,” “Tarzan Escapes,” “Tarzan's Secret Treasure” and “Tarzan’s New York Adventure.” Before becoming an actor, Weissmuller won five Olympic gold medals for swimming and set 67 world records.
Legendary producer Irving Thalberg chose Irish-American actress O’Sullivan to play the role of Jane Harper in the Tarzan movies. O’Sullivan played Jane in six Tarzan movies between 1932 and 1942.
Jiggs appeared as Cheeta in at least three Tarzan movies. He also appeared in the 1933 Laurel and Hardy short film, “Dirty Work,” and the 1939 Dorothy Lamar movie, “Her Jungle Love.”
