As of 2016, some of the most notable comedians who have performed on HBO include Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Louis CK. Other comedians who have performed HBO specials include Davis Cross, Janeane Garofalo and Tig Notaro.
Many of the stand-up comedians who have performed on HBO have edgier material, as the network doesn't have the same restrictions as network and basic cable television. Some of the most popular comedians of this type include Louis CK, who released "Oh My God" in 2013, and Chris Rock, with specials such as "Bring the Pan" and "Bigger and Blacker." Amy Schumer, one of the most successful comedians of 2015, released her special, "Live at the Apollo," after starring in the film "Trainwreck." Dave Chappelle, known for "Chappelle's Show," released his first full-length special, "Killin' Them Softly," through HBO in 2000.
HBO comedy specials have also featured less famous stand-up comedians. These include David Cross, who performed "The Pride is Back" after previously creating and starring on "Mr. Show," another HBO series, and Tig Notaro, who released "Boyish Girl Interrupted." Additional stand-up comedians who have had their own HBO specials include Janeane Garofalo, on an episode of "HBO Comedy Half Hour;" Wanda Sykes, with "I'ma Be Me;" and Whoopi Goldberg, with "Whoopi Goldberg: Direct From Broadway."
