As of 2015, BBC Sport covers a variety of sports, including rugby and tennis. BBC Sport is a department of the BBC North division and provides coverage for BBC’s website and television stations. BBC also holds the broadcasting rights for many of the sports being broadcast in the UK. BBC Sport broadcasts the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and Australian Open live on its television networks. The Rugby Union and Rugby League are also both broadcast and covered by BBC Sport.
Football and Formula One racing are other sports covered by BBC Sport. BBC shares the rights to the FIFA World Cup with UK’s ITV Network. It broadcasts both group and knockout stage games, including semifinal and final showdowns. BBC has also shown highlights of the Premier League on “Match of the Day” since 1999.
Half of the Formula One races are shown live each season, while others are provided with highlights. The British Grand Prix is always shown live on BBC, including its final race.
In 1988, the BBC first began its sports coverage during the 1988 Summer Olympics. Various sports coverage continued for the next two decades, until BBC launched its official news website including sports in 1997. Three years later, BBC Sport became a separate division, and an exclusive sports website launched.
