Speed painting is a technique used by artists to create a complete work in a limited amount of time. The amount of time allowed to complete a speed painting may vary from a few minutes to several hours.
Speed painting is frequently used by digital artists but may be employed by artists working in traditional media as well. However, digital art has several advantages for speed painters, including a lack of drying time that is present in traditional painting and the ability to quickly correct mistakes. An early pioneer of speed painting was Denny Dent, an American artist active in the 1980s who painted portraits of celebrities, taking only a few minutes to complete each work.
