"A Separate Peace" is a coming-of-age novel set at a New Hampshire boarding school around the outbreak of World War II. Written by John Knowles, the novel chronicles the friendship of Finny and Gene and the jealousy that later consumes Gene. It examines the many emotions and personal struggles that plague adolescents as they grow older.
Although Finny and Gene are best friends, Gene quickly becomes jealous of Finny's affinity for sports and his lively and friendly personality. This jealousy consumes Gene to the point that when he sees an opportunity to injure Finny, he does. Due to a slight move by Gene, Finny falls and shatters his leg during one of the games the two usually play together. Although everyone believes it was an accident, the truth torments Gene throughout the novel.
