Selena, whose given name was Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, was an internationally acclaimed Tejano singer. Billboard magazine named her the Top Latin Artist of the '90s and Best Selling Latin Artist of the Decade. Selena won several Grammy awards over the course of her short career.
Serena was laid to rest on April 2, 1995 in a morning service with 600 guests in attendance, most of whom were family members. The service was broadcast live on Corpus Christi and San Antonio radio stations.
The funeral was held later that day at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. Observers estimated that approximately 60,000 fans lined a mile-long route to Seaside Memorial Park to mourn Selena's death.
On April 3, 1995, Our Lady of Pillar Church held a mass to commemorate Selena's life. Reports estimate that 450 people attended the service, filling the 225-seat church.
Selena died at the age of 23 after being shot in the shoulder by the former president of her fan club who was also the manager of Selena's clothing boutique, after Selena confronted her with evidence of embezzlement.
