Ricky Van Shelton was a famous solo country music artist. He was born in Danville, Virginia to Jenks and Eloise Shelton, and his father performed gospel music. Through his father love of gospel music, Ricky Van Shelton developed his musical talent in church and then later discovered country music.
Ricky Van Shelton is the youngest of five children. Ricky first began performing in his older brother's band and then later moved on to performing in Nashville nightclubs. He was eventually discovered by newspaper columnist Jerry Thompson, who landed Shelton an audition with Columbia Records. In his music career, Shelton has won the Country Music Association Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1989 and TNN/Music City New Award for Male Artist of the year in 1990 and 1991.
