About 1,200 people assembled at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California for a memorial tribute for Rick James in August 2004. Stevie Wonder sang, "I've Had Some Good Days." Other notable guests included Chaka Kahn, Jamie Foxx, Jermaine Jackson and Barry Gordy, Jr., the founder of Motown Records.
Other celebrities in attendance included Nona Gaye, Marvin Gaye's daughter, and R&B singer Teena Marie. Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader, and singer Yvette "Corvette" Barlowe each spoke during the four-hour ceremony. Although the memorial occurred in California, Rick James was interred following a funeral in Buffalo, New York, where he was born.
