The original hosts of “Designer Guys,” Chris Hyndman and Steven Sabados, were a real-life couple. The second set of hosts, Matt Davis, Allen Chan and Anwar Mekhayech, were business partners and close personal friends.
Hyndman and Sabados kept their relationship secret when they hosted “Designer Guys” from 2001 to 2004. They went public as a couple in 2007 when they began hosting the home improvement and lifestyle show “Steven and Chris.” Hyndman and Sabados, who also launched their own home decor brand, producing a line of furniture, rugs, accessories and wine, got married in 2008. In August 2015, Hyndman died after falling from the sixth-floor balcony of the couple’s condominium in Toronto.
Davis, Chan and Mekhayech hosted “Designer Guys” from 2005 to 2008. Chan and Davis met at the University of Toronto, where they both studied landscape architecture. After graduation, they started a design firm with their friend, Mekhayech. The trio’s most notable project on “Designer Guys” was traveling to the childhood home of Canadian author Pierre Berton and converting it into a writers’ retreat.
As hosts of “Designer Guys,” Hyndman and Sabados were hailed as early innovators in home design reality television. "Designer Guys," which aired on the Home & Garden specialty channel in Canada, stopped production in 2008.
