American Girl books are published by American Girl Publishing which is a division of the Pleasant Company. The Pleasant Company was acquired by Mattel in 1998, though they still operate under the original name. The books can be purchased along with American Girl dolls that help to bring the stories to life for young readers.
American Girl books are written for girls ages 8 through 12 with a goal of inspiring imagination, creativity and hope in young readers. The books also attempt to encourage young girls to embrace who themselves as they are now and to not be afraid to follow a dream. Each character, or doll, in the American Girl series, has six character books available. This lets girls put a face to the main characters in the book.
