A proscenium arch stage is a type of theater setup that allows the audience to view the stage from a perspective of a picture frame created by the proscenium, or the space surrounding the stage opening, and the arch that is on top of the proscenium. A proscenium arch stage or theater is also referred to as a picture frame stage.
The proscenium theater was conceived during the Italian Renaissance. Its main purpose is to provide a perspective for the audience from which they can view the stage and focus on the theatrical event without distractions. This type of theater also makes it easy to hide theater machinery, sets, gowns and other items that can be concealed in the space behind and on the sides of the stage space created by the proscenium arch.
