Oil-based paints can be thinned with a wide range of solvents and oils, including turpentine, mineral spirits, safflower oil and paint thinner that has been formulated for use with oil paints. The same methods can be used for thinning oil paint whether it's being used for house painting or artistic painting.
Using oil-based paint for home improvement or decor purposes has some advantages over latex paint, though oil paints can be too thick to be used effectively with rollers and sprayers. Thinning the paints with paint thinner or another solvent can help fix this problem. Artists have some additional products at their disposal in the form of specially formulated mediums and solvents made for oil art paints.
