Belle is a major character in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," where she is portrayed as a 17-year-old princess with humble origins. Her name means "beautiful" in French, and American actress Sherri Stoner served as the inspiration for the character's appearance and mannerism.
Unlike previous Disney princesses, such as Ariel or Cinderella, Belle is the first main character who doesn't directly sing the main theme song. Belle loves reading books and is curious about the world around her. She is portrayed as an independent, intelligent young girl. She is also the first Disney princess with dark eyes; her predecessors all had blue or green eyes. Her yellow costume is said to be inspired by a dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in "Roman Holidays," a famous 1950s movie.
