Walt Longmire serves the fictional Absaroka County and is known to be charismatic, dedicated and unflappable. Despite his outward appearance, Longmire is having trouble coping with the loss of his wife and is clearly a man is psychic repair.

The show's first season begins only one year after the death of Longmire's wife, during which time Longmire has relegated most of the police duties to deputies Branch Connally and "The Ferg", while Longmire focuses on his re-election.
