Like most reality shows, what happens on-camera on "Street Outlaws" is largely manipulated by producers, editors and cast members. While billed as "illegal," local police do assist the show in closing down roads and making sure the racing sequences are carried out safely, although the city issuing permits to the show has created some controversy. Accidents also still can and do happen. Big Chief wrecked his car during a race for the show in November of 2015, suffering bruised lungs and a broken collarbone in the process.

The show debuted in June of 2013 for Discovery. Other featured characters include Chuck, Daddy Dave, Freakin Rican, John Andrade Jr. and Tina Pierce, as well as Dominator, Flip and Farmtruck. Each season typically consists of eight episodes, with each episode running 42 minutes. Some special episodes, such as the Season 5 premiere, run an hour and 26 minutes.
