Some popular Vietnamese films include "The Scent of Green Papaya" and "Cyclo." These movies were not only popular in the United States and worldwide but were well-received critically and are considered among the finest contemporary Vietnamese films.
"The Scent of Green Papaya" deals with the life of a 10-year-old orphan who is a servant in the house of a middle class Saigon family. As she grows older, and the Vietnam War approaches, she becomes entangled irretrievably in the life of the family. "Cyclo" takes its name from the Vietnamese cycle cabs. Its struggling protagonist is a cyclo driver who becomes involved in the Saigon underworld at great risk.
