Tom Hanks is one of the most successful actors of all time, both critically and commercially. He has won two Oscars for Best Actor for his roles in "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," released in 1993 and 1994, respectively. In addition, as of 2015, his films have grossed over 8 billion dollars worldwide, making him one of the most financially successful actors in film history.
It could be said that nearly every Tom Hanks movie is popular. With a few exceptions, such as "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (released in 2011) and "Cloud Atlas" (released in 2012), Hanks' films have ranged from fairly successful to overwhelmingly successful at the box office. However, over his 30-plus-year career, his fairly successful movies have been occasionally overshadowed by his overwhelmingly popular films, such as "Forrest Gump" and "Saving Private Ryan." Hanks is unusual in that he has appeared in so many iconic roles that his lesser roles, which would define careers of other actors, are forgettable in the context of his successful career.Learn more about Art & Literature
