Jack Nicholson and Tom Hanks are popular Oscar winners. Nicholson won Oscars for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Terms of Endearment" and "As Good as it Gets," while Hanks won an Oscar for his performance in "Forrest Gump."
AMC Filmsite ranks the most popular Oscar winners based on how many times an actor was nominated for or won an Academy Award. For example, Meryl Streep was nominated for 19 Academy Awards and won three awards. Other actors who were nominated more than five times include Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. In addition, Jane Fonda, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Judi Dench were all nominated at least five times, and all won at least one Academy Award for their cinematic performances.
Cate Blanchett, Jessica Lange, Michael Caine and Denzel Washington were all nominated for six awards and won two during their careers. Popular actors Kevin Spacey and Hilary Swank are the only two actors to have won an Oscar for every nomination.
Amy Adams, Sally Field, Sean Penn, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are other popular Oscar winners, as are Gene Hackman, Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, Julianne Moore and Susan Sarandon. Nominees are selected by the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
