Born in Mexico, Carlos Santana moved to San Francisco as a young child, absorbing the city’s eclectic mixture of musical influences, from jazz to folk. Striking out as a professional guitarist in the 1960s, Santana quickly won fame for his innovative mixture of rock and Latin music. A major figure in rock music throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Santana later experienced a popular and critical resurgence in the 1990s.
Mexican-American Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born into a musical family, playing in the family band at age 10 and making her first professional recordings before age 12. A major figure in Tejano music, Selena became one of the top-selling Latin artists of the 1990s, pushing the genre into the mainstream. Her life was tragically cut short in 1995 when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, founder of the Selena fan club.
Affectionately known as the “Prince of Song,” singer and balladeer Jose Jose began playing music around Mexico City as a teen, releasing his first single in 1965. He rose to major prominence in the 1970s, selling millions of albums and performing around the world.
