Some of the most popular country singers of all time include Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, just to name a few. Historians place the origins of country music in Appalachian fiddle music, with its popularity emerging in the early part of the 20th century.
One of the most famous and popular country music families was the Carter family, who recorded such hits as "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Wildwood Flower." One member of the Carter Family, June Carter, later married Johnny Cash, another legend of country music. Rolling Stone magazine puts Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" on top of its list of all-time country songs, followed by hits from Patsy Cline and George Jones, among others.
