The plot of "The Kite Runner" follows Amir, a young man living in Afghanistan during the 1980s. Amir tries to retain ties with his father, Baba, and another boy, Hassan, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and subsequent Taliban rule.
Amir and Baba immigrate to the United States after the Soviets take over Kabul. There, Amir marries an Afghani girl named Soraya. The death of a family friend brings Amir back to Afghanistan, where he learns that Hassan is dead and his son, Sohrab, is an orphan. After a long struggle with an adoption agency, Amir and Soraya are able to adopt Sohrab and bring him to the United States.
