As of March 2015, there have been four "Degrassi" television series: "The Kids of Degrassi Street," "Degrassi Junior High," "Degrassi High" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation," which had its title shortened to "Degrassi" in its 10th season. "Degrassi High" concluded with the made for TV movie "School's Out." The eighth and ninth seasons of "Degrassi: The Next Generation" both ended with made for TV movies, "Degrassi Goes Hollywood" and "Degrassi Takes Manhattan."

Each series and movie has an ensemble cast. While the students are the focus, adults, including parents and school employees, are also featured in some episodes and movies. "Degrassi" has had several cast changes, as cast members left the show and new cast members were introduced. One reason for the rotating cast is because of the cast members' ages. Younger cast members were introduced to continue to focus on high school students and avoid a college setting.

Series in the franchise have won several awards and received critical acclaim. Although the franchise is set in Canada, it has also achieved popularity in the United States.
