Jake Gyllenhaal plays Homer Hickman in the 1999 movie "October Sky." The movie is based on Hickman's life and decision to take up rocketry after becoming inspired by the launch of Sputnik. Hickman previously told this story in his autobiography "Rocket Boys: A Memoir."
Homer Hickman worked as a NASA engineer from 1981 to 1998. "October Sky" focuses on his life as a teenager in the 1950s when he and his friends attempt to build a rocket to win a science fair. Gyllenhaal's performance as Homer Hickman earned him three nominations for best young performer: one at the Teen Choice Awards, one at the Young Artists Awards, and one at the YoungStar Awards.
