"Downton Abbey" is a British drama set in England during the first half of the 20th century. The series first aired in the United Kingdom on the ITV network in 2010 and then on PBS in 2011. The series focuses on the lives of the Crawley family, the reigning nobility in the rural village of Downton. The opening episode begins shortly after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and follows the struggles of the Crawley family as they learn that the heir to their lineage perished on the ship and a new heir has been discovered. The series goes on to follow the family and its service staff through the events of World War I and beyond.
In 2011, the Guinness World Records organization recognized it as the most critically acclaimed English-language program of the year. The series has received numerous awards and nominations, also becoming the most nominated international series in the history of the Primetime Emmys.
