In 2014, Sports Illustrated's Swim Daily released a video of the 2013 photo shoot in body paint. Upton wears two distinct swimsuits. One is a blue, floral, two-piece bikini with a halter neck. The other swimsuit depicts a white bikini bottom with a jeweled necklace in place of a bikini top. She only wears beaded layers of necklace paint on top.

Upton's first SI Swimsuit photo appeared in 2011, when she was also named rookie of the year. She appeared in Guess Accessory and Lingerie advertisements before appearing on the cover of the SI Swimsuit 2012 issue and the subsequent 2013 issue. The 2013 issue was shot in Antarctica, during the summer.

Other than the SI Swimsuit body paint photo shoot, Upton has not posed completely nude. Her photo shoot for Contributor Magazine shows several scantily clad shots in lingerie. In any photos where she appears topless, the angle or her arms obscure her private parts.

Upton has appeared on the cover of many mainstream magazines including fashion magazines Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar. She appeared on GQ, Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire as well.
