Pain resulting from plantar fasciitis is normally felt in the heel of the foot, the arch of the foot or both. It is more likely to occur in people who are overweight, take up a new form of exercise, are on their feet for long periods of time or wear shoes that are worn out.
The best treatments for plantar fasciitis are rest, heel and foot stretches, and over-the-counter pain relievers, explains Arthritis Research UK. Shoes with arch support and cushioned soles are helpful for chronic plantar fasciitis. If the pain is caused by arthritis or tendinitis, the best treatment is to massage the foot and calf before walking in the morning. The pain could be caused by a stress fracture if the pain is felt when walking in the morning. Stress fractures need to be treated by avoiding activity for six to 12 weeks and potentially by wearing a walking boot or a cast and crutches.
