Johnny Mathis was 21 years old when he recorded his first record. Born in 1935, Mathis made his first trip into the recording studio in 1956.
Johnny Mathis was not only a phenomenal singer, he was very athletic as well. During his college career at San Francisco State College, he set high jump records and was eventually invited to try out for the United States Olympic Team. Around the same time, he went to New York to begin his first recording session. With his father's guidance, Mathis gave up his dream of becoming an Olympic athlete and found fame and fortune as a recording artist.
