Full Answer

Ogres as a fictional character were popularized in the late 17th century with the publishing of "Tales of Mother Goose," but many fictional monsters have had similar qualities to the ogre dating all the way back to Grendel in "Beowulf." Some other famous stories with ogres are "Tom Thumb" and "Hansel and Gretel." Ogres have traditionally been villains and mindless monsters in fiction, but the "Shrek" movies are a recent example of ogres in a heroic role.
