Various artifacts have been recovered at Oak Island since explorers first began excavating in the early 1800s, including old coins and accessories. There are many stories about famous treasure hoards being buried on the island but none has been found.
Rumors of famous treasures buried on the island abound, including the hoards of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and Marie Antoinette's jewels. There is little evidence to support any of these theories, however. Most exploration has been centered on the "money pit," a 230-foot deep man-made pit of unknown origin. Most of the artifacts recovered on the island have been found in this area.
