St. Therese titled her autobiography "L'histoire d'une âme," or "The Story of a Soul", and started writing it in 1895. It was published on September 30, 1898.
"The Story of a Soul" was published following St. Therese's death in 1897. Her sisters Pauline and Marie had initially asked her to write a childhood memoir. The work expanded to St. Therese's other writings, including poems and letters written to her fellow nuns. Members of her religious order edited the autobiography, with Pauline reorganizing and revising her sister's collection of works to create "The Story of a Soul." The saint repeatedly referred to her memoir's "benefit to souls" before her death.
