The performance usually took place at Boardwalk Hall in late February. The string bands that performed were a part of the annual Mummers parade and used only nonamplified instruments. The bands often had many different instruments as well as elaborate costumes with lots of sequins. Each band usually organized its performance and music around a certain central theme. Some of the string bands that performed include the Ferko, Greater Kensington, Polish American, Quaker City and South Philadelphia string bands.

The final performance of the Mummers String Band Show took place in 2013. The event did not take place in 2014 due to the inability to use the traditional Boardwalk Hall location. As of 2015 the event has transformed into the Mummers Mardi Gras Parade. This event is also held in late February and in 2015 was held on Main Street in Manayunk, a neighborhood in Philadelphia. Many of the familiar bands from the "Show of Shows" returned to perform at the event.
