His first movie was "Endless Love" in 1981, in which he only appeared as a minor supporting character. Later that year he had his first starring role in "Taps" alongside Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton, and followed that up with four movies in 1983. One of those movies, "Risky Business," catapulted him into the mainstream. In 1986 he made "Top Gun," which is his highest grossing film as of 2015 with a total adjusted gross of $389 million.

Between 1981 and 2014, Tom Cruise's films grossed a total of $3.3 billion, with "Rain Man," "A Few Good Men," "Jerry Maguire," "Mission: Impossible II" and "War of the Worlds" among the highest grossing. Tom Cruise has three Oscar nominations, the first of which was for "Born on the Fourth of July" in 1989 and the following two for "Jerry Maguire" in 1996 and "Magnolia" in 1999.
