The plot of "The Magnificent Seven" involved an oppressed Mexican village hiring seven gunfighters to defeat their oppressors. The gunfighters are able to overcome the odds and save the day but at great cost.
After one of many raids by Calvera, played by Eli Wallach, citizens of a small Mexican village set out in search of guns and ammunition to protect themselves. Instead, they encounter a Cajun gunfighter named Chris Adams, played by Yul Brynner. Adams suggests hiring himself and other experienced gunfighters, telling the citizens it is both cheaper and safer than fighting on their own. Despite poor pay, Adams is able to personally recruit six other gunfighters.
Some of the gunfighters recruited include Vin, played by Steve McQueen, Britt, played by James Coburn, and Lee, played by Robert Vaughn. The gunmen arrive at the Mexican village and pass time by bonding with the locals and training them in self-defense. The climax of the movie features another raid by Calvera and his bandits, which leads to a massive shoot-out. Calvera and his bandits are killed, but so are four of the seven gunfighters. Two of the surviving gunfighters, Chris and Vin, ride off into the sunset. The last gunfighter, Chico, played by Horst Buchholz, decides to stay behind and help the locals rebuild their community.
