Ghandi, starring Ben Kingsley, holds the Guinness World Record for the most extras used in a film. Richard Attenborough used over 300,000 extras when he shot the film’s funeral scene.
The funeral scene was shot in 1981, on the 33rd anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death, in Delhi. Approximately 200,000 people were volunteers, and the remaining extras were paid a small fee of 75 rupees per day. Despite the large number of people involved, the scene only runs 125 seconds.
