Many TV channels and networks, including CBS, the CW, the Discovery Channel and NBC have free iPhone apps that allow for mobile viewing of the network?s television shows. Cable television networks such as MTV, Lifetime and HGTV also have free apps, but require the viewer to have a cable subscription.
Each network or cable channel offers slightly different features with their iPhone apps. The NBC app offers all of the episodes of current hit shows and some past series such as ?Miami Vice,? ?The A-Team? and ?The Incredible Hulk.? CBS also offers full episodes of its current series, but in limited number. For example, the app user might only have access to the latest two episodes of ?The Good Wife.?
Users can sign up to receive notifications when new episodes of their favorite series are available. The Discovery Network offers free iPhone apps for all of its channels: The Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Science and Discovery News. All of these apps offer full episodes of selected series on each channel.
Most of the TV channels? apps offer additional content. For example, the History Channel app includes hundreds of videos on historical topics and two original Web series, ?History: Deconstructed? and ?Bet You Didn?t Know.?
Cable subscribers can also download a free app from their cable network to watch television on their iPhones. For example, the Charter app allows the viewer to watch live television from over 170 of its channels.
