Mick Dodge, also known as the Barefoot Sensei, was born in 1953. He spent his childhood split between the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, where his grandparents lived, and in military bases around the world with his father, including Okinawa, Japan, where he graduated from high school.
As a young adult, Dodge was a Marine for six years, then a civilian mechanic at Joint Base Lewis-McCord in Washington State. In 1990, at the age of 37, Dodge decided to leave society and live in the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula.
As of 2015, Dodge is featured in a television show on the National Geographic Channel titled "The Legend of Mick Dodge."
