Memehir Girma Wondimu is a controversial Ethiopian healer of the Christian faith. Authorities banned Girma from representing the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, including any participation in speaking for the church or organizing baptisms. Prior to this ban, Girma lead an exorcism and prayer event four times a week that drew crowds of thousands, held at both St. Michael Church in Merkato and at St. Stephen Church in Meskel Square. Followers of Girma sought spiritual and physical healing and paid Girma to drive evil spirits away with ritual performance. Although banned, Girma continued to perform healing outside Ethiopia. On Oct. 28, 2015, Ethiopian authorities arrested Memehir Girma in the capital city Addis Ababa and placed him under investigation. As of January 2016, he is suspected of fraud for earning a large sum of money performing fake exorcisms. Many videos of his rituals and exorcisms appear in YouTube videos.
Memehir Girma was born in Bale, Ethiopia in 1958. In 1969, Girma was ordained by Abune Mekariosat at St. Michael Church in Bale Goba. Girma claims that he received a spiritual gift from God to identify evil spirits by taking Communion often.Learn more about Art & Literature
