Matthew Gray Gubler is an American actor, director, fashion model and painter. His best known television role is Spencer Reid, a criminal profiler on the CBS police procedural show "Criminal Minds." Gubler has also performed in many other TV shows and movies since his 2004 debut in Wes Anderson's film, "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou."
Gubler was born on March 9, 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada. His parents are John, an attorney, and Marilyn Gubler, a rancher and political activist. Matthew attended the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies for his secondary education, majoring in acting. Following this, he matriculated to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts to study film. While attending, he was discovered by a model scout and subsequently worked for clothing designers such as American Eagle, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger.
Gubler's breakthrough into acting came while he was working as an intern on the set of Wes Anderson's film. The director encouraged Matthew to audition for the movie, which he did. He was cast as the character Nico, intern number 1. During filming of the movie, Gubler shot behind-the-scenes footage, eventually editing it into the documentary "Matthew Gray Gubler's Life Aquatic Intern Journal."
A year after this breakthrough, Gubler was cast in his most well-known role as of 2015, the eidetic genius Dr. Spencer Reid.
