What Are Some Facts About Mark Wahlberg?

Mark Wahlberg is an American actor who began his career as rapper Marky Mark. Known for stripping down to his boxers and projecting a risqué bad-boy image, his act was popular with teen girls, and he landed a major hit album. His behavior caused much controversy, however, and after becoming involved in numerous scandals he decided to pursue acting.

Mark Wahlberg was born in 1971 in a poor district in Boston, and is the youngest of nine siblings. He dropped out of high school at 14, fell into a life of crime and drugs, and eventually went to prison after he was convicted of assault. His brother, Donnie Wahlberg, was a member of the popular 1980s teen pop band New Kids on the Block, and helped secure Mark a recording contract after he got out of prison. When Mark's rapping career ended, he dropped his moniker and began appearing in movies as Mark Wahlberg.

Wahlberg's first movie was "Renaissance Man" in 1994. In 1997, he received great recognition for his leading role as porn star Dirk Diggler in "Boogie Nights." He received an Oscar nomination in 2006 for "The Departed," in which he played a foul-mouthed Boston cop. He has also appeared in comedies such as "I Heart Huckabees," "Date Night," "The Other Guys" and "Ted."
