Mark Lowry is best known for writing the lyrics to the song, "Mary, Did You Know?" The Christian comedian, singer and songwriter is also known for performing with the Gaither Vocal Band throughout the 1990s and again from 2009 to 2013. As a solo artist, he has recorded 12 albums.
"Mary, Did You Know?" started as Lowry's response to a request to write a script for a church Christmas play. He decided to write questions he would have liked to ask Mary, Jesus' mother. Years later, musician and songwriter Buddy Green wrote music to accompany the words. The song quickly became a popular Christmas tune, with many artists, including Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers, recording it for Christmas music albums over the years.
Lowry served as the baritone in the Gaither Vocal Band. His lively stage presence led to him taking a larger role during concerts, often playing the comic foil to Bill Gaither's straight man act between songs. Since retiring from the band, Lowry has recorded a number of solo albums and performance videos and, as of 2015, continues to perform live throughout the United States. He also appears frequently as co-host on Tony Campolo's "Red Letter Christians" television show.
