As of August 2014, there are five books in George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice," the book series on which the "Game of Thrones" television series is based. Martin has said that he plans to write seven books in total.
The first book of the series is titled "A Game of Thrones," and the first season of the television show follows its plot. "A Clash of Kings," "A Storm of Swords," "A Feast for Crows" and "A Dance with Dragons" are the other four novels in print as of August 2014. The sixth novel is provisionally titled "The Winds of Winter," and the seventh, "A Dream of Spring." Though Martin originally planned for the series to be a trilogy, he abandoned that plan before he finished the first novel.
