According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest running anime series is "Sazea-san." The show debuted in October 1969 and, as of May 2014, continues to air on Fuji Television in Japan.
The animated series "Sazea-san" is based on a comic strip by Machiko Hasegawa, one of the first female manga artists. The original manga series ended on Feb. 21, 1974, when Hasegawa retired from drawing the comic strip. Both the comic strip and show follow the life of Sazea, a traditional suburban housewife whose views are increasingly feminist. As of May 2014, the show airs every Sunday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Fuji Television.
