As of February 2015, lists of the top 10 movies of 2014 can be found on the IMDB, Metacritic, The Numbers and Box Office Mojo websites. These sites rank movies by fan ratings, critic reviews or the amount of money a movie grossed either internationally or in the United States.
The Internet Movie Database, or IMDB, website has multiple top movie lists, including one based on user ratings and one based on domestic grosses. The Numbers also ranks movies based on domestic grosses. However, it bases the rankings on how much a movie made in 2014, while IMDB ranks movies that were released in 2014 on how much they made in total. Due to this difference, IMDB has "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" ranked above "Guardians of the Galaxy" due to its higher total domestic gross, but The Numbers has the order reversed because part of the gross for "The Hunger Games" came in 2015.
Box Office Mojo has rankings for both domestic and international grosses. It ranks movies based on the total gross, like IMDB. Metacritic features a rankings list based on the top 10 movie rankings released by major film critics and publications. It assigns a point value based on a movie's placement on each critic's top 10 list, then ranks each movie by its total points.
