There are endless amounts of fantasy creatures but among the most common are dragons, trolls, centaurs, and giants. Additional fantasy creatures include elves, unicorns, fairies, minotaurs, mermaids and hobbits. Fantasy creatures are often one of the most-engaging and wonderful elements within works of fantasy.
Dragons are a common feature across a number of the most-popular works of fantasy. They are a central plot element in George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, an antagonist in "The Hobbit" by Tolkien, and as natural occurrences in J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. Dragons can be portrayed in a number of ways across different works of fantasy, from mass-murderer and aggressor, to liberator and protector.
Trolls are also found within the "Harry Potter" series and they are generally characterized as large, dumber and slower creatures that are quick to anger and difficult to calm. Centaurs are fantasy creatures that are half-man and half-horse and find their roots in Greek mythology.
Giants are another creature that trace their roots back to human mythology but are commonly portrayed in works of fantasy. They are generally of human proportions and looks but of a far greater size. They are massive and brutally powerful and are often shown to be an enemy for the protagonist to conquer.
