Nancy Barbato was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Sept. 11, 1917. She changed her name to Nancy Sinatra when she married Frank Sinatra.
Frank Sinatra met Nancy Barbato at 19 years old. The two were married on Feb. 4, 1939 in Nancy's hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey. Their wedding was held at the Our Lady of Sorrows Church. After the ceremony, the newlyweds moved in with each other to an apartment house on Bergen Avenue. They had their first child together there, who was named Nancy Sinatra. They later had Francis Wayne Sinatra on Jan. 10, 1944, and both of their children were born at the Margaret Hague Hospital.
Afterwards, they moved to Hollywood, California. During this time, Frank strayed from the marriage with extramarital affairs, the first of which was with Marilyn Maxwell. To Nancy's embarrassment and dismay, these affairs became public knowledge, and she considered calling off the marriage. They announced their separation on Valentine's Day in 1950. At this time, Frank's extramarital affair with Ava Gardner was making the problems worse, and the affairs quickly became public knowledge again.
Frank later expressed his regrets at marrying Nancy, saying that he had mistaken a strong friendship for love.
