Carl Thomas Dean was born on July 20, 1942. At the age of 22, Dean was driving by the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee, in his truck when he saw a young girl that he decided he had to talk to. He stopped the truck, and she introduced herself as Dolly Parton. She was 19 at the time. Two years later, on May 30, 1966, Dean and Parton were married in Ringgold, Georgia.
After their marriage, Dean helped to raise several of Parton's younger siblings. According to the tabloids, the couple never had children of their own because Parton suffered a medical crisis in 1984 and had to have a partial hysterectomy.
According to Dolly Parton's autobiography, Dean ran an asphalt road-paving business in Nashville until he retired while she chased her dreams to become a country superstar. Dean is rarely seen in public with his wife, and he has only ever seen her perform once. Parton claims that Dean is simply a private person who does not like crowds. According to the tabloids, however, Parton and Dean live entirely separate lives and have separate houses.
Despite the rumors, in 2014 Parton and Dean renewed their wedding vows on their 48th anniversary, and they own and live in a house 10 miles outside of Nashville in the mountains of Tennessee.
