Shortly thereafter, she applied to a variety of TV stations and was eventually hired by WALB in Albany, Georgia, in 1993.
After two years at WALB, Abernathy was hired by The Weather Channel as one of its meteorologists. For her job at The Weather Channel, Abernathy returned to Atlanta, where she eventually met her husband. After a number of years at the channel, Abernathy was released, along with many other employees, due to a downsizing of the company. Following her dismissal, Abernathy was hired as the meteorologist for "Evening Edition," which she also co-hosts with Carl Parker.
