What Is Kenshin?

"Kenshin" is the name of the protagonist in the manga and animated series "Rurouni Kenshin." "Rurouni" is a neologism crafted from the verb "ru," meaning "to wander," and "ronin," meaning "masterless samurai." This roughly translates into "Kenshin the Wandering Swordsman."

The "Rurouni Kenshin" manga, as of 2014, has over 70 million copies in circulation. The story follows Himura Kenshin who, after leaving his life as an assassin, becomes "Rurouni Kenshin." He vows to never take a life again, and to protect the people of Japan. The manga series, which revolves around themes of atonement, peace, and romance, contains 28 volumes.
